Hi, I'm Brenda Thompson, registered dietitian and owner of Life Skills Nutrition. We just
covered some healthy snacks that we want to consume, and I'm going to show you some snacks
that you want to try to avoid. These snacks are full of sugar and not very many nutrients
and can help cause some road blocks when we are trying to lose weight. So over here we
have chips, which provide a lot of calories, hydrogenated fats, saturated fats, and they're
very high in salt. So you want to try to avoid those. Candy, which is loaded with sugar and
has very little nutrients. They're pretty much all sugar, however, they do taste good
and when eating in very small amounts, that's fine. As long as we're putting them on our
food log. We want to try to avoid foods that contain artificial sweeteners and additives
because even though they're not really high in sugar, they may also not be very high in
nutrients like we saw in the food guide pyramid. We want to try to get all of those vitamins,
and minerals, and antioxidants. Processed snack foods that claim they contain fruits
and vegetables in them are also products that you want to try to avoid. You should never
replace fruits and vegetables with snacks. Pastries are very loaded with sugar, and they
provide very little nutrients, although they're very beautiful. Also, candy which contains
the cocoa butter and high saturated fat and other fats, are also loaded with sugar and
are very low in nutrients and should be avoided. These foods do taste good, and we should never
restrict ourself completely from eating them. However, maybe allowing ourselves to eat them
once a week or once every two weeks is more appropriate when we are trying to lose weight
and become healthier individuals.
