Top NUTRITION TRENDS that are Sh*t! | CLEAN eating, DETOX & Superfoods Debunked
In this episode of Abbey's Kitchen Abbey breaks down the Top 5 worst Nutrition Buzzwords of 2016. This covers everything from Superfoods to Cleanse Diets. Her sidekick, and everyone's favorite ill-informed nutrition junkie, Extreme Diet Debbie, joins her in the effort.
Buzzword number one is "Superfood". There is a lot of hype surrounding so-called superfoods like kale, acai juice, and flax seeds just to name a few. While kale is good for you calling it a superfood is really nothing more than a clever marketing ploy. The word superfood insinuates that one single food is a magical cure-all for all of your problems. There is no food on this entire planet that can do that. All foods have their own redeeming qualities and you certainly shouldn't overlook the healthier ones. Don't make the mistake of thinking that there is one single food that is going to give you all the vitamins and minerals you need to have a balanced diet. It simply doesn't make sense.
Buzzword number two is actually an entire phrase, "Good & Bad Foods". Debbie is up to her old tricks again claiming that last week she wrecked her diet eating pasta all week long. To make up for it she is going to eat nothing goji berries for the entire next week, which is ridiculous. It is human nature to categorize and dichotomize every aspect of our existence, which of course includes the food we eat. By labeling foods as good or bad in our minds we create a negative connotation that we ultimately end up associating to ourselves every single time we eat a food that we have categorized as bad. This leads to shame and guilt that is completely unnecessary. To top it all off when we label a food as good or bad we tend to crave it more, very much like using reverse psychology on ourselves. Strip your foods of any particular label and just accept them for what they are, just foods.
Buzzword number three on the Top 5 list is another phrase, "Clean Eating". When Abbey was a kid she would ask her Mom to wash off her grill cheese sandwiches because the toasty bits on the top looked like dirt to her. As she grew older she of course came to the realization that those toasty bits are actually quite good and anything but dirty. When she hears people talk about clean eating it reminds her of the grilled cheese story. Subscribing to the clean eating idea is in fact akin to trying to categorize your foods as good or bad. The bottom line about clean eating is that obsessing about eating clean to the point where it takes over your life is completely unhealthy.
Buzzword number four is "Inflammation". How inflammation managed to even become a buzzword is still a bit of a mystery. It is a broad topic, far too broad to simply apply it to specific foods like sugar, as Extreme Diet Debbie does. Inflammation just basically means that there is an immune response to something going wrong in your body. It's all too easy to blame specific foods or food groups as the cause of inflammation but you really need to look at the bigger picture. From a nutrition perspective getting a diet rich in antioxidants will help fight the symptoms of inflammation, but remember that it is just one tiny piece of a large complicated puzzle. By focusing solely on a food or food group you could be masking the true root cause of your inflammation.
Buzzword number five is "Cleanse". This topic is no stranger to Abbey's channel and she has revisited it on numerous occasions. Let's just get this straight right now once and for all. There is no cleanse, juice based or otherwise, that will rid your body of all the toxins you have taken in leaving it squeaky clean inside and out. The reality of this situation is that we have many organs specifically dedicated to the task of removing toxins from our bodies. Our kidneys, liver, digestive tract, and lungs all perform this exact function on their own non-stop. You are literally cleansing 24 hours a day 7 days a week naturally. This is another great example of a marketing ploy to sell badly flavored juice that will supposedly cleanse your body completely for an exorbitant amount of money. Cleanses are nothing more than the most socially acceptable form of disordered eating there is.
